What is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the breast tissue.

It occurs when abnormal cells in the breast grow out of control & form a tumor.

Breast cancer can affect both men & women, but it is more common in women.

There are several different types of breast cancer, but the most common type is invasive ductal carcinoma, which begins in the milk ducts & then spreads to other areas of the breast.

Other types of breast cancer include invasive lobular carcinoma, inflammatory breast cancer, & Paget's disease of the breast.

The exact causes of breast cancer are not fully understood, but certain factors can increase a person's risk of developing it.

These include being a woman, getting older, having a family history of breast cancer, having certain gene mutations, & exposure to certain hormones.

Symptoms of breast cancer can include a lump or thickening in the breast or underarm area, changes in the size or shape of the breast, nipple discharge, & changes in the skin of the breast.

Breast cancer is typically diagnosed through a combination of mammography, biopsy, & other imaging tests.

Treatment for breast cancer can include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, & hormone therapy, depending on the stage & type of cancer.

Early detection & treatment can greatly improve the chances of a successful outcome.
